see you in the dark
On the opening night of a group exhibition a young female artist, Nora, is hacked by an ominous troll. What follows is a descent into sexual trauma, as she and her friend Kyra search for the perpetrator in a night-long odyssey.
See You In The Dark is Asena Nour's much anticipated narrative debut. An authentic and semi-autobiographical film, introducing an original, cerebral, and evocative vice in independent cinema. Her distinctive approach to social realism - what she calls "intimate vérité" - at once, up close and personal, whilst providing a starkly observational portrait of a London rarely seen on screen.
‘To speak of sexual violence is to conjure the unspeakable, the unheard and undisclosed, it was my intention with ‘See You In The Dark’ to bring to light, what it means to be heard when speaking of this violence. The core of the film is the strength, resilience and healing nature of female friendships, which softens and alleviates the quiet, isolating and nightmarish turn of events outside Nora and Kyra's control. The necessity of community, as an all-encompassing force is what I believe to be the antidote to the use of spectacle, revenge or evidence when it concerns women’s stories surrounding sexual trauma. This film is interested in the subjectivity of Nora, as well as paying homage to the sense of community found in multicultural, working-class and inner-city London. ‘See You In The Dark’ is an intimate close-up and contained portrait of a young woman's worst night. it is personal, collective, biographical and intended to give survivors a voice.’
